Destination Madagascar

MADAGASCAR

Madagascar, the fourth largest island globally, is a haven for wildlife enthusiasts, 400km off the African mainland. Boasting stunning landscapes and diverse ecosystems, it harbours 5% of the planet’s species, with an impressive 80% of its flora and fauna found nowhere else. Its cultural blend is equally captivating, influenced by Indonesian, Arabic, African heritage, and French colonialism. While its economy revolves around crops like paddy rice, coffee, vanilla, and cloves, the tourism sector is evolving to cater to luxury travellers. Yet, the authentic appeal of Madagascar lies in its unparalleled natural treasures and extraordinary biodiversity.

Madagascar's Regions

The island’s geography is characterised by distinct areas, each marked by a high plateau that spans the country’s length, extending approximately 1,600 kilometres and reaching impressive altitudes of 2,800 meters at its highest points.

This plateau acts as a natural divider, outlining various regions and contributing to the island’s diverse landscapes. With 60% of its land designated as rural, Madagascar boasts vast expanses of untouched wilderness and agricultural fields, offering a glimpse into traditional rural life.

Nestled in the heart of the island is the capital city of Antananarivo, affectionately known as ‘Tana,’ which serves as a bustling hub of culture, commerce, and government. Its central location makes it a convenient starting point for exploring the island’s many wonders, from lush rainforests to pristine coastlines.

THE EAST

With its wealth of protected landscapes, the East of Madagascar immediately showcases why it’s renowned for its biodiversity. In the Andasibe-Mantadia National Park, visitors are greeted by lush tropical forests brimming with diverse wildlife, including 14 lemurs and over 100 birds. The nearby Palmarium Reserve offers another excellent opportunity to encounter the iconic Indri Lemurs before continuing to the stunning coast. Along the way, travellers can discover the enchanting island of Sainte Marie, known for its tranquil beaches that belie the region’s colourful pirate history, as it once stood as a strategic outpost on the spice trade route. Major destinations include the Andasibe-Mantadia National Park, Palmarium Reserve, Masoala National Park, and Sainte Marie.

THE SOUTH

From the arid and awe-inspiring canyons surrounding Isalo National Park to the lush rainforests of Ranomafana, the southern region of Madagascar offers a diverse array of landscapes and cultural experiences. Here, traditional tribal communities continue age-old practices such as cattle ranching and fishing, maintaining their way of life for generations. Pristine beaches dot the shoreline along the coastline, adding to the region’s attraction. Prominent destinations in the area include Isalo National Park and Fort Dauphin.

THE NORTH

With its beautiful beaches, breathtaking landscapes, and vibrant atmosphere, the northern region of Madagascar offers an ideal setting for both beach extensions and standalone beach experiences. The marine ecosystem is exceptionally diverse, with frequent sightings of whales, whale sharks, dugongs, and turtles. Well-known destinations include Nosy Be, Amber Mountain National Park, Ankarana Reserve, and Nosy Ankao, which boasts Madagascar’s only 5-star deluxe property.

THE WEST

The natural and cultural attractions of western Madagascar warrant the additional effort to explore. This expansive region encompasses broad, rolling savannahs and farmlands adorned with dry forests boasting numerous baobab trees and expansive mangrove swamps extending towards the coast. Main destinations in this area include Anjajavy Reserve, Tsingy de Bemaraha, Avenue of the Baobabs, and Kirindy Reserve.
