Destination Zambia

ZAMBIA

Described as the raw and authentic Africa, Zambia boasts breathtaking scenery and some of the most incredible big game viewing opportunities on the continent. Despite this, it is often overlooked in favour of more ‘iconic’ destinations like the Masai Mara, the Serengeti, or the Okavango Delta, particularly by those embarking on their second safari. However, Zambia’s safari experience is unparalleled, captivating many enthusiasts with its exceptional offerings. Once experienced, it is often deemed incomparable. With the majestic Victoria Falls, one of the world’s seven natural wonders, gracing its southern border, Zambia offers enticing circuit itineraries that blend superb wildlife encounters, thrilling action and adventure, and awe-inspiring landscapes.

Zambia's Regions

Lusaka stands as the bustling capital of Zambia, offering a vibrant glimpse into modern African city life—an aspect often overlooked by visitors. It serves as an invaluable “decompression” stop before or after a safari adventure, allowing travellers to immerse themselves in contemporary African culture.

Zambia’s rich attractions include many natural wonders, boasting 20 National Parks spread throughout the country. These include Lower Zambezi National Park, South Luangwa, Kafue, and Livingstone, each offering unique and unforgettable experiences.

LOWER ZAMBEZI NATIONAL PARK

The Zambezi River ranks the fourth largest in Africa, with safari experiences centred around its banks, where wildlife congregates. All camps and lodges are strategically placed along the river, capitalising on its allure. The river, coupled with a northerly escarpment, serves as a natural focal point for wildlife, with much of it concentrated within a 5km radius of the river. Activities encompass land- and river-based adventures, with arrivals at camps often via the river, creating memorable experiences. While the diversity of wildlife may not match that of other Zambian parks, the area boasts substantial populations, including large herds of elephants, buffalo, and impala, as well as thriving populations of predators such as leopards and lions. Additionally, the Zambezi offers excellent fishing opportunities.

SOUTH LUANGWA

Situated amidst one of the continent’s pristine wilderness areas, this destination showcases an abundance of species, including some native to the region. Accommodation options range from lodges to intimate bush camps, often featuring sleep-outs and hide for a unique experience. Visitors can even embark on guided walks between camps. The Luangwa River is a central element of the safari adventure, with opportunities for river safaris, particularly during the Emerald Season. Its meandering course results in fertile soil deposits, supporting a rich diversity of wildlife. Despite its size, the river remains undammed, maintaining its natural seasonal rhythms and ecological variety. The area is renowned for its leopard and wild dog populations, adding to the appeal of this captivating wilderness.

KAFUE

Zambia’s oldest and largest national park, once the largest in Africa, retains its relatively undeveloped status for tourism. Boasting a diverse range of mammal species, including the highest number of antelope species found in any park on the continent, it offers a unique safari experience. Visitors can embark on balloon safaris over the Busanga Plains, providing an unforgettable aerial view of the wildlife below. Accommodations consist of small and remote camps, with innovative options such as Green Safaris’ “birds’ nest” camps, offering guests a novel and immersive stay amidst nature.

LIVINGSTONE

The Victoria Falls are a natural wonder of global importance, making its inclusion in any Zambian itinerary essential. While some large hotels sit directly atop the Falls, smaller, more intimate boutique camps are also located upstream. Beyond their breathtaking beauty, the Falls offer an abundance of activities to suit every adventurer’s taste, including microlight flights, bungee jumping, white water rafting, visits to the Devil’s Pools, experiences at the Elephant Café, excursions on the Livingstone Express, and tours to Livingstone Island.
