Mauritius: a practical country guide for Australians

Plan a Mauritius visit with verified entry advice for Australians, west-coast climate normals, transport, health and fees, plus wildlife, heritage and flight links for a safari combination.

Mauritius is an Indian Ocean island east of Madagascar, with coastal lagoons, inland forests and a capital at Port Louis. This guide focuses on the main island: entry for Australian passport holders, seasonal conditions, transport, health, heritage and wildlife. It also explains the published flight links useful when combining Mauritius with a mainland African safari. Sources: geography, Port Louis and the airline references below.

No advance visa for ordinary tourist visits; official terminology and passport rules differ. As at November 2026, check the entry sections below and Canberra guidance.

Documents to prepare before departure

As at November 2026, the PIO travel requirements and Canberra information note dated April 2026 call for a valid passport, a return passage ticket to the country of origin or residence, eligibility to re-enter that country, adequate funds and a confirmed hotel booking or accommodation sponsorship. They do not specify a single daily cash minimum in these documents. Gainful activity requires the appropriate permission.

Passport validity is unresolved between official sources. PIO says the passport must be valid beyond the intended stay; Canberra specifies at least six months beyond the stay. Check with the High Commission in Canberra and the airline before travel rather than assuming the shorter wording will be accepted. For a safari followed by Mauritius, have the full onward itinerary available and confirm how the return-ticket condition applies to it.

The general PIO visa page mentions a maximum six months in a calendar year granted case by case. That is not a promise of six months at the border. PIO visa conditions.

When to go and how to read the climate figures

The Mauritius Meteorological Services climate summary defines a warm, humid summer from November to April, a cooler, relatively dry winter from June to September, and transition months in May and October. Island-wide, February and March are the wettest months and October is the driest.

For a lower-rainfall trip, June to September and the October transition are useful planning choices based on that climatology, not guarantees of clear skies. May is a transition out of summer. Choose warmer summer travel only with flexibility for rain and disruption, and use current cyclone advice for the travel dates.

The monthly figures below are for Medine, the west-region reference station, not all Mauritius. Temperatures are mean daily minimum to mean daily maximum; rainfall is the monthly long-term mean, all for 1971 to 2000. They are historical climate normals, not November 2026 forecasts or resort-specific predictions. MMS West/Medine table. The station's driest month is September; this does not contradict October being driest in the island-wide summary. No crowd or price rankings are asserted.

Wildlife and conservation visits

Focus wildlife plans on forests, reserves and marine habitats. The National Parks and Conservation Service species reference identifies the Mauritius kestrel, pink pigeon, echo parakeet, Mauritius fody and Mauritian fruit bat among the island's fauna. Its undated population figures are not used here. Presence in a species list does not guarantee a sighting on a short visit.

| Place | Wildlife or habitat focus | Planning approach |

| --- | --- | --- |

| Black River Gorges | Forest habitat; the NPCS reference places kestrels, pink pigeons and fodies here | Choose a walking route appropriate to fitness and weather; consider a local guide |

| Ile aux Aigrettes | Ebony forest; pink pigeon, Mauritius fody and Mauritius olive white-eye | Use the reserve's guided tour |

| Main-island forests | Mauritian fruit bat | Observe without treating presence as a guaranteed encounter |

Sources: NPCS, MTPA reserve description and walking guidance. Check access, weather and any activity arrangements before travelling to a reserve; no entry fee or tour schedule is assumed here.

Heritage beyond the beach

Le Morne Cultural Landscape is a UNESCO World Heritage property. The southwest mountain sheltered people escaping slavery during the 18th and early 19th centuries. Its significance is resistance to slavery, not simply its appearance in coastal photographs. UNESCO property record.

In Port Louis, Aapravasi Ghat preserves the remains of an immigration depot associated with indentured labour after the abolition of slavery. The capital also has Central Market, Chinatown and Caudan Waterfront. MTPA city guide.

For walking excursions, MTPA recommends appropriate shoes, drinking water, telling someone your route and using a local certified guide. Current access, trail conditions and weather should determine the day's plan. MTPA walking advice.

Getting there from Australia

As at November 2026, these are verified published route options, not a checked itinerary for any particular departure date. Reconfirm operating days, connection times and baggage conditions directly with the airlines before booking.

| Starting point | Published option | Evidence and limitation |

| --- | --- | --- |

| Perth | Direct Air Mauritius flight to Mauritius | Air Mauritius winter timetable lists Perth to Mauritius flight MK441 on page 13 for the season from 25 October 2026 to 27 March 2027. Air Mauritius also identifies the return Mauritius to Perth route as direct |

| Sydney or Melbourne | One-stop routing via Perth, using the Virgin Australia partnership and Air Mauritius | The Air Mauritius April 2026 network map shows both cities via Perth. This is a published network option, not proof of a same-day connection on your dates |

International arrivals use Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport in the southeast. Flight websites may label the destination Port Louis, but the airport is not in that city. Arrange the transfer to the actual accommodation location. MTPA airport guidance.

Planning recommendation: compare the complete itinerary, not just the international sector. Confirm whether a connection is on one ticket, whether bags are checked through and who handles a missed connection. No through-baggage entitlement, fixed connection time or airfare is asserted here.

Pairing Mauritius with an African safari

Use a mainland air gateway to connect the beach or island stay with the separately planned safari. As at November 2026, airline pages establish the following links; check the actual dates and direction before booking.

| Gateway | Verified airline link | What not to assume |

| --- | --- | --- |

| Johannesburg, South Africa | Air Mauritius explicitly lists direct Mauritius to O R Tambo flights | An onward safari transfer or protected connection is not included by virtue of this route |

| Nairobi, Kenya | Kenya Airways markets Nairobi to Mauritius round trips | This page alone does not establish a non-stop service, operating frequency or a connection to a safari airstrip |

| Cape Town, South Africa | Air Mauritius explicitly lists direct Mauritius to Cape Town flights | Do not reuse its historical May/June schedule exception for other months |

Planning recommendation: build the mainland and Mauritius sectors together, allow disruption flexibility and check every country's entry and transit rules. International-airline luggage allowances do not establish the allowance on a separate safari-aircraft booking.

Health and border checks apply to the whole route. As at November 2026, Smartraveller reports Ebola-related entry restrictions and health screening after recent travel in DRC, Uganda or South Sudan. Check the current affected-country list, transit treatment and eligibility with the High Commission of Mauritius in Canberra and your airline before committing to a safari combination. Do not assume that a flight being sold proves admissibility. Travellers arriving from malaria countries may receive health follow-up or be asked for a blood test. Yellow-fever certification may depend on previous travel and transit; seek itinerary-specific advice rather than applying one rule to all African safaris.

Getting around the main island

As at November 2026, these options are described by Smartraveller and MTPA. Recheck local services and licence requirements before travel.

  • Transfers and taxis: use registered taxis, marked with a yellow sign and the operating base on the door. Taxis are not metered, so agree the fare before travel. Booking through accommodation is recommended, especially for night journeys.
  • Self-drive: driving is on the left. Smartraveller says drivers must be at least 18 and have a valid Australian driver's licence or an International Driving Permit; a digital licence may not be accepted. Check rental-company conditions and insurance separately. Narrow, poorly lit or poorly maintained roads, pedestrians, dogs and motorcycles are hazards.
  • Public transport: buses link the main towns. The Port Louis to Curepipe Metro Express corridor is useful for town travel, not a substitute for a transfer to every coast. Check the route and last service locally; no universal bus frequency is promised.
  • Boats and excursions: use licensed providers and appropriate safety equipment. MTPA describes water taxis, boat excursions and an Ile aux Cerfs shuttle. Confirm the departure point and weather before going.

For hiking, carry water, use suitable shoes, tell someone the route and consider a local certified guide. Do not use map distance alone to promise a driving or walking time.

Money, accommodation fees and tipping

The currency is MUR, the Mauritius rupee. Smartraveller reports ATMs in most towns and large shopping centres, and credit-card acceptance at most hotels, restaurants and large shops. Check your card with your bank and keep a payment backup. Money advice.

As at November 2026, the Mauritius Revenue Authority requires a EUR3 per person per night tourist fee for eligible tourists aged 12 years and above, effective from 1 October 2025. It applies at hotels, guesthouses, tourist residences and domaines registered or required to register under the Tourism Authority Act. Accommodation managers collect it.

MRA lists exemptions for children under 12, tourists staying free of charge, Mauritius residents, Mauritians abroad holding a Mauritian passport, and holders of valid Premium Visas or Residence Permits. Smartraveller instead says 'over 12', so official wording differs for a child who is exactly 12. Check with the accommodation and MRA before travel; budget according to MRA's explicit age-12 threshold pending clarification.

Tips are discretionary, not mandatory. Check the bill for a service charge before adding a tip; no fixed porter, guide or housekeeping amount is asserted. MTPA tipping guidance. Ask whether a quote includes the tourist fee, meals, transfers and excursions rather than assuming they are included.

Health preparation and medical care

As at November 2026, Healthdirect recommends seeing a doctor 6 to 12 weeks before travel to review routine vaccinations and destination-specific needs. Provide the complete route, including every safari and transit stop, medical history and planned activities. This is individual medical advice, not a universal vaccine checklist for entry.

The WHO certification list records Mauritius as certified malaria-free in 1973. That does not remove the need for mosquito precautions: Smartraveller reports dengue and chikungunya and notes historical malaria outbreaks. Ask a prescribing clinician how a mainland malaria prescription applies to the complete itinerary.

Use repellent, clothing covering arms and legs, and insect-proof accommodation. Seek medical advice for fever or other concerning symptoms. Smartraveller advises avoiding raw or undercooked food, washing hands and avoiding potentially contaminated water.

There is no reciprocal free-healthcare agreement between Australia and Mauritius. Medical standards vary, private treatment can be expensive and serious illness or injury may require evacuation. Obtain insurance covering medical treatment, evacuation and planned activities, including diving if applicable. Check current health and entry advice before departure and during a multi-country trip.

Staying safe on land and water

As at November 2026, Smartraveller advises exercise normal safety precautions. That rating does not mean risk-free travel. Petty theft occurs in tourist areas and near ATMs; keep valuables out of sight, lock accommodation and vehicles, avoid secluded or poorly lit areas and do not walk alone after dark. Use accommodation registered with the Mauritius Tourism Authority.

Avoid demonstrations and large gatherings. Recheck the current advisory before departure and while travelling.

For diving, snorkelling and other adventure activities, use registered operators with valid permits, insist on safety equipment and check insurance cover. Do not undertake swimming or water activities alone; take local warnings and weather reports seriously. No beach, reef or lagoon should be assumed safe solely because it is sheltered.

Smartraveller warns of severe drug penalties and restrictions on smoking, vaping and importing e-cigarettes. Check local laws before packing or participating in activities, and do not carry packages for someone else.

Language, customs, electricity and practical preparation

MTPA lists English, French and Creole, UTC+4, the international dialling code +230, and 220/230V electricity with British three-square-pin and two-round-pin plugs. Check your device's voltage label and pack a suitable adaptor. MTPA useful tips.

Smartraveller advises care with dress and behaviour at religious sites and in rural communities. Local customs.

Planning checklist: save accommodation directions, booking confirmations, the insurer's assistance line and emergency contacts offline. Confirm roaming or local mobile options with a provider before departure; no island-wide coverage guarantee or SIM price is claimed. Ask accommodation about accessible transfers or activity arrangements if needed, rather than assuming a beach stay makes every excursion accessible.
