Your first safari
A first-safari planning reference for Australian travellers: compare activities, allow for transfers, check baggage rules and prepare for health and entry requirements. Park rules use named Kruger examples, not regional assumptions.
This guide covers the decisions to check before booking a first safari in southern or East Africa. It uses Kruger National Park in South Africa and Safarilink flights as specific examples, rather than treating one park's rules or one airline's allowance as an Africa-wide standard. Activity, health, baggage and entry guidance was checked as at November 2026; recheck the linked authorities and your operator before travel.
Plan the route before choosing the room
For Kruger, SANParks advises against trying to cover too much ground and recommends slow travel with regular stops. It identifies early mornings and evenings as usually the most productive viewing periods.
Use a day-by-day itinerary to compare proposals. Record each transfer's departure point, arrival point and expected duration, then mark which activities remain possible on arrival and departure days. Ask for alternatives with fewer moves rather than imposing a fixed minimum number of nights at every camp.
For self-driving in Kruger, plan around the park's speed limits and gate times, not just the distance on a road map.
Compare the actual activities, not the reserve label
Night drives are not exclusive to private reserves: SANParks offers guided night drives in Kruger. Kruger's ordinary visitor rules prohibit off-road driving and require visitors to observe gate times. A guided activity and independent driving are not interchangeable permissions.
| Option to compare | Verified example | What to establish before booking |
|---|---|---|
| Self-drive | Kruger permits visitors to drive themselves and stay in public rest camps | Route, gate times, vehicle requirements and accommodation |
| Guided drive | SANParks operates morning, sunset and night drives in Kruger | Exact camp, departure time, duration, vehicle occupancy and price |
| Guided walk | SANParks describes walks with two armed field guides and up to eight guests | Fitness requirements, accessibility, footwear and age eligibility |
| Private-reserve stay | Do not assume access rights from the accommodation label | Which reserve is used, whether night or off-road drives are permitted, and any restrictions |
The walk details come from SANParks' Guided Walks page. Ask about the guide's qualifications and experience, the planned activities and group size alongside room facilities. These are comparison questions, not a rating of any operator.
Understand the activity timetable
The following are SANParks' published Kruger examples as at November 2026, not a standard schedule for all safaris.
| Guided activity | Published duration or timing |
|---|---|
| Morning drive | 3 to 3.5 hours; departure half an hour before official gate opening |
| Sunset drive | Around 3 hours; leaves before dusk and returns after sunset |
| Night drive | Around 2 hours; departure at 19:30 or 20:00 according to season |
SANParks says these times are guidelines. Check the current schedule with the relevant camp before travel and reconfirm on arrival. Its guided drives exclude children under 6; its guided walks exclude children under 12. These are activity restrictions, not a general minimum age for visiting Kruger.
Wildlife viewing and self-drive rules
For ordinary visitors driving in Kruger, SANParks' rules, checked as at November 2026, include:
- Stay in the vehicle except in designated areas. Keep doors closed and do not put any part of the body out of a window or sunroof.
- Observe maximum speeds of 50 km/h on tar roads and 40 km/h on gravel roads.
- Stay on permitted roads; do not drive off-road or past a no-entry sign.
- Be inside camp or outside the park gates by the applicable closing time.
- Do not feed or disturb animals. Store food securely at camp.
- Do not use drones inside or over the park.
Read the gate permit and check the current park rules before travel. For any other park or reserve, obtain that authority's rules rather than transferring these limits to a different destination.

Match clothing to the place, season and activity
SANParks describes Kruger's climate as hot and rainy from October to around March, with warm, dry days and cold nights from April to September. It specifically recommends warm clothing for winter night drives. Increased summer foliage can make animals harder to see. This is a Kruger example, not a calendar for all southern and East African destinations.
Pack removable layers for the temperatures expected on the booked activities. For Kruger's guided walks, SANParks specifies comfortable shoes and natural-coloured clothing suited to the weather. Do not turn that walking guidance into a universal dress code for every safari.
SANParks' visitor checklist includes binoculars, a camera, wildlife reference books, a hat and sunscreen. It also calls for a torch or headlamp outside at night because camp lighting is limited. Add personal medicines, insect repellent and a small first aid kit in line with Smartraveller's health advice.
Check baggage for every flight sector
Use the operating airline's allowance for each booked sector. Do not assume the allowance on an international ticket applies to a separate safari flight.
As at November 2026, Safarilink's published baggage policy provides this named example:
| Safarilink destination scope | Allowance per person |
|---|---|
| Destinations other than the exceptions below | 15 kg, including hand baggage, in soft bags |
| Zanzibar, Kisumu, Diani, Lamu, Malindi, Entebbe and Mombasa | 20 kg, including hand baggage, in soft bags |
Infants not paying for a seat have no baggage allowance. Safarilink explains that most of its aircraft have small, irregularly shaped luggage compartments. Excess baggage carriage depends on aircraft payload or space and the captain's discretion; do not plan around an assumed tolerance.
Check your operator before travel for the specific flight, bag dimensions, equipment restrictions and excess-baggage arrangements. Weigh the complete allowance, including hand baggage. Safarilink's figures are not a regional standard.
Arrange health advice before departure
As at November 2026, Smartraveller recommends seeing a doctor 6 to 8 weeks before travel. Take the full route and activity list, including transit countries, and discuss routine and travel vaccinations, malaria prevention, personal medicines and any existing health conditions. Recheck its health advice and the advice for each destination before travel.
Kruger is a malaria zone. Do not infer a camp's health risk from its price, accommodation style or whether it is privately operated. Obtain individual medical advice rather than using this guide to select medicines.
Smartraveller advises protecting against insect bites, using sun protection and checking whether medicines are legal and available at the destination. It recommends seeking medical advice if unwell overseas or after returning to Australia.
Check entry documents and insurance separately
As at November 2026, Smartraveller's visa guidance directs Australians to check every destination and transit point, then use the relevant official immigration or embassy website. Requirements depend on nationality and planned activities; a visa on arrival is not the same as visa-free entry. Check current requirements before booking and again before travel.
Read the insurance Product Disclosure Statement before buying. Smartraveller recommends covering all destinations, including stopovers and transit points, checking activity exclusions and declaring pre-existing conditions. For the proposed safari, ask the insurer to confirm cover for the specific drives, walks, any self-driving and emergency medical transport. Do not assume an activity is covered because it appears in the itinerary.
