Why the Okavango floods in the dry season
Rain in Angola feeds the Okavango's annual flood months later. Local rainfall, river inflow and the extent of flooded land follow different seasonal patterns, so a month alone cannot describe conditions across the Delta.
The Okavango Delta in north-west Botswana contains permanent marshes and seasonally flooded plains. Its annual river flood occurs during the local dry season because water from the Angolan Highlands takes months to reach and spread through the system. This guide separates the rainfall cycle from the flood cycle and explains how to use that distinction when planning a visit. UNESCO; NASA Earth Observatory.
Where the water comes from
The Cuito and Cubango rivers drain headwaters in Angola and feed the Okavango River. The river enters Botswana from Namibia at Mohembo, flows through the Panhandle and spreads into the fan-shaped Delta at Seronga. The Delta is an inland wetland system, not a river mouth on the coast: it does not discharge into a sea or ocean. Hydrological study; Botswana Tourism Organisation; UNESCO.
The delay is not simply a long journey downstream. NASA describes meandering waterways with very shallow gradients. Research also identifies slow flood propagation within the Delta and storage in the Angolan headwaters, including peatlands that help sustain river flow. Together these processes separate the timing of upstream rain from the expansion of flooded land in Botswana. NASA; hydrological study.
Two seasonal cycles, not one
The following is a broad seasonal description, not a forecast for a particular camp or travel year. The hydrological study distinguishes rainfall in the headwaters, local rain and the area of land under water.
| Process and location | Broad timing | What the timing describes |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Rain in the Angolan Highlands | September to April | The upstream rainfall season supplying the river system |
| Local rain in the Okavango Delta | November to March | Rain falling on the Delta itself |
| Smallest inundated area in the Delta | January to February | A seasonal low in flooded extent, despite local summer rain |
| Largest inundated area in the Delta | July to September | Extensive flooding during the local dry season |

Why a single peak month is misleading
Upstream rainfall varies between years, and the study reports positive correlations between rainfall in the Cuito and Cubango catchments and the Delta's annual flood inundation. The flood also spreads slowly within the Delta. A seasonal maximum in total inundated area is therefore not a promise of the same water conditions everywhere. Hydrological study.
July to September is a useful broad window for understanding extensive seasonal flooding, not an evidence-based ranking of the best safari months. Use it to frame questions about a specific location rather than to guarantee an activity or sighting. This guide does not provide a current-season flood forecast.
What the flood means for wildlife and activities
The Delta supplies drinking water during the surrounding dry season. Botswana Tourism describes large numbers of mammals retreating to its dryland region during the drier winter months and notes that game viewing varies with the season and the availability of water and food. This supports a seasonal wildlife explanation, not a guarantee of particular sightings. NASA; Botswana Tourism Organisation.
Botswana Tourism lists mokoro rides, game drives and speedboat cruises among Delta activities, while explicitly noting that activities differ from camp to camp. Do not read a Delta-wide flood calendar as an activity schedule for every property. Ask the selected operator to confirm the activities and water conditions relevant to the booked location and dates. No camp-specific operating months are verified here. Botswana Tourism Organisation.
Questions to resolve before booking
Location and water
- Identify the exact camp and waterway: Ask which part of the Delta the stay uses, rather than relying on a general destination description.
- Request a dated local conditions update: Ask what is observed now, what is only expected for the travel dates, and when the next update will be available.
Activities and itinerary
- Confirm each priority activity separately: Ask whether mokoro rides, speedboat cruises and game drives are offered at the chosen stay, and what alternatives apply if a planned activity cannot operate.
- Check fixed holiday dates against local expectations: For an Australian school-holiday trip, give the operator the exact dates. Do not substitute a general July recommendation for a location-specific assessment.
