South Africa's online traveller declaration: the 2026 change
What Australian travellers need to know about South Africa's online Customs declaration from 1 July 2026, including rail travel and the designated-transit-area exclusion.
From 1 July 2026, travellers entering or leaving South Africa through air, land, sea or rail ports must submit a customs traveller declaration online before travel, unless an exclusion or limited paper exception applies. Air or sea passengers who stay inside a designated transit area are excluded. This is a South African Revenue Service customs requirement for goods, currency and related items — not a visa application and not a replacement for immigration or health requirements.

Who must complete it and when
SARS says travellers entering or leaving South Africa through air, land, sea or rail ports generally must submit the declaration online before travel. Air or sea passengers who only transit South Africa and do not leave the designated transit area are excluded. The legal rules say an online declaration may be submitted no more than 24 hours before departure; for an itinerary with stops before South Africa, use the final leg directly to South Africa. Rail travellers should submit before reaching the first or last railway station in South Africa, depending on direction. A declaration is needed for each traveller who is not excluded. A parent or legal guardian may submit for a minor, and an assisting person may submit for someone unable to complete it because of age, illness or disability.
Information to have ready
Traveller details

- Arrival or departure itinerary: Including the relevant port and travel dates
- Contact details and valid email: The confirmation and instructions are emailed
- Travelling-companion details: Where the form asks for them
Customs details

- Foreign-registered vehicle details: If the journey includes bringing one across the border
How to submit and what happens next
Use the Traveller Management System linked from the official SARS Traveller Declaration page, the SATMS mobile app, or another official SARS channel. Submit one declaration per person. SARS emails a confirmation with Customs instructions. Save that confirmation on your phone or print it, and follow its directions at the port. If any information changes before Customs processing, update the declaration.
What you do and do not declare
The declaration asks about goods, currency and other items that may require Customs attention. SARS says ordinary personal effects for your own use do not need to be declared, but goods over the traveller allowance, restricted items, currency or bearer instruments and some vehicles may need details. Answer the questions truthfully; Customs determines any duty, VAT or further steps.
Frequently asked
Is this required for both arrival and departure?
Generally, yes. SARS describes the requirement for travellers entering or leaving South Africa through air, land, sea or rail ports, subject to the designated-transit-area exclusion and limited paper exceptions.
Do transit passengers need a declaration?
Not when travelling by air or sea, only transiting South Africa, and remaining inside the designated transit area. If you will clear immigration, collect baggage or leave that area, confirm the requirement with SARS.
How early can I submit?
The published rules say no more than 24 hours before the relevant departure. For an arrival with connecting stops, use the last leg directly to South Africa.
Do children need a declaration?
Yes. A parent or guardian may submit it on a minor's behalf.
Is this the South African visa application?
No. It is a Customs declaration. Visa, passport, immigration and health rules remain separate.
What should I do with the confirmation?
Keep it available on your phone or printed and follow the Customs instructions it contains.
Can I use a paper form?
Only in limited circumstances such as system failure, unavailable internet at the port, or another reasonable inability to submit electronically.
